CONWAY, S.C.  - The UNC Asheville women's basketball dropped a 74-58 decision to Big South Conference foe Coastal Carolina on Monday evening at Kimbel Arena, as the Bulldogs could not shake off a sluggish start on offense.

"Right now we're not a very good team defensively," said Asheville head coach Betsy Blose. "We gave up a lot of open shots and allowed them to build an early lead. We controlled the ball better in the second half but just allowed too many opportunities down the stretch."

Coastal (12-8, 5-6 BSC) had four players score in double figures, with Shatia Cole and Taylor Epley scoring 15 points apiece. Olivia Irick added 12 to Coastal's total while Kayla Cook chipped in 10.

Asheville (7-15, 3-8 BSC) was led offensively by Gentry Manley, who posted a team-high 14 points in the game. Shonese Jones and Leah Wormack scored 10 apiece for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs had won three in a row against the Chanticleers and were looking to complete the season sweep for the second year in a row.

Senior guard Lindsey Thompson scored eight in the loss for the Blue & White, as she now needs 11 points to reach 1,000 for her career.

Asheville struggled offensively to open the game but was able to find a rhythm midway through the period. Coastal led by as much as 16 with 8:38 to go in the frame but the Bulldogs were able to cut the lead to 10 heading into the break. The Chants led 36-26 at the half.

Leah Wormack led all Bulldogs with eight points in the first half, while Shonese Jones and Gentry Manley each posted six. Coastal was led by Taylor Epley, who scored nine in the opening frame.

The Bulldogs came out firing in the second half and was able to cut the lead to seven with just under nine minutes to go, but the Chants were able to hold off the Asheville rally the rest of the way, winning by 16.

Asheville will be back in action on Saturday when they host Presbyterian in the first game of a doubleheader with the men's team. It will be a "Think Pink" game, with proceeds collected at the game going to the Kay Yow Foundation. Tip off is set for 2 p.m.
