LYNCHBURG, Va. - Liberty went on a 28-0 run that spanned the end of the first half and the start of the second half to break open a close game as the Big South Conference regular-season champion Lady Flames downed UNC Asheville 84-53 at the Vines Center.
The Bulldogs were led by Lindsey Thompson with a team-high 15 points, while freshman guard Tacey Trammell chipped in 13 and Shonese Jones had 12 markers. Jones, one of the leading candidates for Big South Freshman of the Year, also topped the Bulldogs in both rebounds (7) and assists (5).
Devon Brown and LaKendra Washington led Liberty with 15 points each. Regan Miller added 14 points.
The first half has six lead changes as Asheville (7-20, 3-13 BSC) battled the Lady Flames on pretty even terms for the first 15 minutes of the half. Trammel knocked down a trey to cut the Liberty lead to 35-31 at the 4:50 mark.
But the Lady Flames (20-8, 15-2 BSC) would take control of the game by scoring the final 16 points of the half to lead 51-31 at halftime.
Trammel led Asheville with 11 first-half points. The Bulldogs were 5-of-9 from three-point line in the opening half.
Opening the second half, Liberty scored the first 12 points to increase the lead to 63-31. Thompson finally ended the run by knocking down a three-pointer.
Asheville finishes the regular season with two home games. The Bulldogs host Campbell Friday night at Justice Center starting at 7:30 p.m. Friday's game will offer free admission to all fans attending. Fans will also get one free popcorn and one free soft drink at the game.
