ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville women's basketball team finishes up the regular season this evening when the Bulldogs host High Point at Kimmel Arena starting at 7 p.m. A video-stream of the broadcast will be provided at www.uncabulldogs.com.
Asheville (7-21, 3-14 BSC) would clinch a berth in the Big South Conference Tournament later this week with a victory. The Bulldogs are tied with Gardner-Webb for eighth place in the league standings and only the top eight get to go to the tournament. A Runnin' Bulldog victory tonight at home vs. Campbell and an Asheville loss tonight would send Gardner-Webb to the tournament. If both Asheville and Gardner-Webb lose, the Bulldogs would make the tourney due to tie-breaking procedures.
The Bulldogs are trying to stop a frustrating 10-game losing streak this evening. Asheville lost to Campbell Friday night, 74-55. The Bulldogs led for most of the first half but went ice cold from the field in the second half to fall to the Lady Camels.
HPU leads the all-time series against UNC Asheville with a 27-11 record in 38 career meetings. The Panthers beat Asheville in the two teams' first meeting this season, 89-49, on New Year's Eve in High Point, N.C. Senior Shamia Brown led High Point with 17 points and eight rebounds while redshirt-freshman Lindsay Puckett came off the bench to score 16 points and grab eight rebounds. UNC Asheville was led by Shonese Jones, who scored a game-high 19 points. Lindsey Thompson was the only other Bulldog in double-digits with 11 points and Kelli Riles grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Jones continues to have a great year for Asheville as she tops the team in scoring with a 15.1 average. Lindsey Thompson is next at 10.9 points per game. Junior forward Kelli Riles in third in the Big South and ninth nationally in rebounding with a 10.9 average.
Prior to the game, UNC Asheville will honor seniors Lindsey Thompson and Katie Wise as the duo play their final home game as a Bulldog.
