ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Erin Reynolds scored 21 points and Tayler Tremblay added 14 points with six assists as High Point defeated UNC Asheville 74-56 in the Big South Conference final regular season game of the year Monday night at Kimmel Arena.
Shonese Jones led the Bulldogs with a game-high 25 points. Asheville finished the regular season with a 7-22 overall record and 3-15 worksheet. It was the Bulldogs' 11th straight loss.
High Point (18-11, 13-5 BSC) led from start to finish in this one. The Panthers scored the first 11 points of the game and rolled to a 33-16 halftime lead. The visitors controlled play in the paint in the opening half with a 22-8 advantage. Asheville was ice cold from the field in the opening half as it shot .214 (6-of-28). The home team was also hurt by 11 turnovers. Reynolds and Tremblay combined for 17 points in the opening half.
In the second half, High Point steadily built on its lead and led by as many as 30 at 70-40 with 5:52 left on a three-pointer from reserve Hallie Gunnoe.
To the Bulldogs credit, Asheville outscored the Panthers 16-4 in the final five minutes. Jones scored 12 of her 25 points in those five minutes. High Point only outscored the Bulldogs 41-40 in the second half.
Asheville shot much better in the second half as it knocked down 18-of-31 (.581) shots from the field. Jones scored 22 points in the second half as the freshman guard went 10-of-13 from the field.
The Panthers did outrebound the Bulldogs 22-10 in the second half and 46-32 for the game.
Monday's game was the final home game for two senior Bulldogs in Lindsey Thompson and Katie Wise. Thompson finished her career as the school's all-time leader in three-pointers made with 202. She had nine points and five rebounds for the game.
Both teams play next in the Big South Conference Women's Basketball Tournament at High Point starting on Friday. The Bulldogs will be the eighth seed and take on regular-season champion Liberty at Noon. The Panthers are the second seed for the tournament and host seventh-seeded Coastal Carolina at 6 p.m.
