CHARLOTTE, N.C. (BigSouthSports.com) – Campbell’s Tonisha Baker has been named the Big South Conference Women’s Basketball Choice Hotels Player of the Week, while Shonese Jones of UNC Asheville was tabbed The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week for games played Feb. 28-March 4, the League announced today.
Baker, a junior from High Point, N.C., averaged 28 points per game and shot 66 percent from the field to lead her squad to a pair of wins last week. She got her week started with a career-high 31 points on 68 percent from the field to go along with 10 rebounds, four assists and three steals in the win over UNC Asheville on March 2. Three days later at Gardner-Webb, Baker connected on 63 percent from the floor to finish with 25 points. The guard also chipped in nine boards, five helpers and five steals in the win over the Runnin’ Bulldogs. The honor is her second Big South Player of the Week nod this season.
Jones, a guard from Etowah, N.C., averaged 18.5 points per game in two contests for Asheville last week. She highlighted her week with her ninth 20-point game of the year as she posted 25 points against High Point on March 5. She got the week started with 12 points against Campbell on March 2. For the week, Jones finished with six boards, four assists and five steals. The honor is her fourth Freshman of the Week plaudit this season.
Also nominated for women’s basketball Player of the Week for Week 16: Lakeitha Alston (Charleston Southern), Erin Reynolds (High Point), Devon Brown (Liberty), Mariah Pietrowski (Presbyterian College), Da’Naria Erwin Spencer (Radford) and Dequesha McClanahan (Winthrop).
