ASHEVILLE, N.C. – In their first game at Kimmel Arena in over two weeks the UNC Asheville women’s basketball team fell to Big South Conference foe Charleston Southern, 54-48, on Thursday evening, as the Bulldogs saw their consecutive loss streak reach 14 games in a row.

We weren’t as tough as Charleston Southern tonight,” said Asheville head coach Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick. “Both teams came in with injuries and have been playing through adversity, but tonight CSU made big plays and we did not execute offensively down the stretch. When the ball is not falling you have to get stops on we did not in crucial moments.”

With the six-point setback, the Blue & White fall to 2-21 on the year, with a 0-12 mark in Big South play. The Lady Bucs improve to 7-14 overall, and 2-10 in conference action.

Tonight was the second meeting of the season between the two schools, with CSU earning a 73-59 victory in Charleston on Jan. 24.

Freshman Paige Love recorded the first double-double of her career, scoring a team-best 14 points and pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds. Senior Kelli Riles scored 11 and pulled down nine boards, giving her 972 points and 986 rebounds for her career.

Gentry Manley also chipped in 10 points to the Bulldogs’ total, who out-rebounded CSU 44-40 in the contest.

The Lady Bucs were led offensively by D.J. Fowler, who scored a game-high 17 points while dishing out six assists in directing the CSU offense. Lakeitha Alston also recorded a double-double, scoring 15 and grabbing 10 rebounds.

In the first half the Lady Bucs ran out to a 17-6 lead over the first seven minutes, before the Bulldogs fought back and went on a 19-11 run to end the half. CSU took a 28-25 lead into the break.

The second half saw Asheville cut the Lady Bucs’ lead to 32-30 with 16:32 to go, but CSU would go on a 20-9 run over the next ten minutes to push their lead to 52-39. The Bulldogs outscored CSU 9-2 over the final five minutes of the contest, but could not complete the comeback.

The Bulldogs will be at home in Kimmel Arena in their next contest, hosting Big South foe Coastal Carolina on Saturday afternoon. The Chanticleers earned a 73-62 victory over Asheville earlier this season. Opening tip is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
