ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Stacia Robertson scored 23 points to lead High Point to a 71-66 Big South Conference win over UNC Asheville Thursday night at Kimmel Arena.
With the victory High Point improves to 9-8 on the season with a 5-3 mark in Big South play while UNC Asheville drops to 7-10 overall and 4-4 in league play.
The Bulldogs were led by Paige Love’s 19 points and Shonese Jones contributed 11 points. Love also posted a game-high seven rebounds while fellow guard Brittany Gwyn tallied four assists.
High Point’s Latrice Phelps tallied 14 points, while DeAnneisha Jackson chipped in 10 for the Panthers.
The Bulldogs led for most of the first half as Jones scored eight early points to give Asheville an early lead. Love then took over the final 14 minutes of the half. She scored 17 points in the opening half as the home team built a 32-23 lead with seven minutes in the half.
Robertson dominated the last part of the half for the Panthers. She scored 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting to help knot the game at 37-37. The Bulldogs led 39-38 at halftime
Asheville shots .538 (14-of-26) from the field in the opening frame. High Point almost matched it by shooting .484 (15-of-31). The Panthers had a 10-2 edge in the first half on second-chance points.
The second half saw the Panthers take a quick lead as Teddy Vincent hit a pair of 3-pointers to put HPU up 44-39 with 18:27 left in the game. The Panthers kept the Bulldogs at arm’s length for most of the second half, but a Gwyn runner with the Bulldogs down one gave Asheville back the lead 60-59 with 6:36 to play.
HPU retook the lead but the Bulldogs would not let the Panthers get too far away, and again tied the game at 64-64 on a pair of KJ Weaver free throws with 3:54 left.
With time winding down and the Blue & White down 69-66, Gwyn put up a 3-point attempt that just missed going in. She got her own rebound and passed to Love who had a good look from the top of the key, but that shot went just wide and HPU was able to grab the rebound and secure the win.
UNC Asheville hosts defending Big South Conference champion Liberty Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. High Point travels to Gardner-Webb on Saturday for a 3 p.m. league battle.
