Winthrop Holds Off Comeback Bid By Bulldogs, 62-55

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The UNC Asheville women’s basketball team dropped a 62-55 decision to Winthrop on Saturday afternoon in Big South Conference play, as the Bulldogs comeback bid fell short late in the second half of the contest. 


With the setback the Bulldogs fall to 9-14 overall with a 6-8 mark in the Big South while the Eagles improve to 18-6 and 12-3 in league play.


Paige Love scored a team-high 16 points with Leah Wormack chipping in 10 to the Bulldogs’ total. Love and Wormack each posted six rebounds to lead Asheville with Love recording three steals and Wormack posting two blocks.


Dequesha McClanahan and Erica Williams tallied 19 points apiece while Schaquilla Nunn scored 10. Nunn and Taylor Calvert pulled down 11 and 10 rebounds, respectively, with Nunn tallying four blocks.


Winthrop outrebounded the Bulldogs 48-to-35, including 32 defensive boards in the contest.


The Eagles took an early lead in the contest and pushed it to as much as 15 at 32-17 with 7:26 left to go in the first. Asheville went on a 9-0 run over the next two minutes capped off by a Love 3-pointer to cut the lead to 32-26. Winthrop would respond with an 8-3 run of their own to take a 40-29 lead into the break.


The second half saw the Bulldogs mount a furious comeback, cutting the lead to 48-44 with 9:55 to go on a Love jumper in the paint. Wormack would cut the lead to 50-48 at the 7:37 mark, but Winthrop would respond with a pair of buckets to push their lead back to five.


Asheville cut the lead to 54-51 with 4:48 remaining on a Brittany Gwyn jumper, but the Eagles would finish the contest on an 8-to-4 run to earn the 62-55 victory.


The Bulldogs will host Big South foe Radford on Thursday at Kimmel Arena, as the Blue & White will look to snap their current three game losing skid. Asheville defeated the Highlanders 68-61 on Jan. 11 and will look to complete the season sweep beginning at 7 p.m. on the campus of the Bulldogs.
