Welcome to Throwback Thursday. Each Thursday we will take a trip down memory lane with an old photograph of Bulldogs past.
Today we start with one of the best moments in school history. Back in 1984, the UNC Asheville women's basketball team won the NAIA National Championship. It's the only national title in school history.
The Bulldogs finished with an amazing 32-5 record and captured four games in Cedar Rapids Iowa to win the national championship. That team only had 10 players on the roster but three of those players are in the UNC Asheville Athletics Hall of Fame as is head coach Helen Carroll.
The three players in the Hall of Fame include center Sheila Ford, forward Kim Duncan and guard Trish Wyatt. Ford was the tournament's MVP and is the school's all-time leading scorer and rebounder. Duncan is second all-time in scoring, while Wyatt hit the winning shot for the Bulldogs in the title game against Portland.
The photo above was taken downtown as city and county leaders celebrated the national championship by honoring the Bulldogs when they returned from Cedar Rapids.
