Editors Note: With the 2013-14 school year behind us, UNC Asheville's student-athletes will be providing us write-ups to allow everyone to get to know them a little better. Today we meet women's basketball player, Brittany Gwyn.

Brittany Gwyn is a rising senior on the UNC Asheville women’s basketball team. Graduating in 2015, she is majoring in sociology, with the hope of receiving her Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice. One day, she’s planning on playing basketball overseas. After her basketball career is over, she wants to go into law enforcement.

While Brittany isn’t training to become a professional basketball player, she finds time to become involved on UNC Asheville’s campus through the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. When given the opportunity to become opened to new ideas and people through SAAC, she couldn’t pass it up. She was really surprised how fun, influential, and enthusiastic SAAC has become, and is looking forward to building off of its success from this past year. She loves participating in SAAC meetings, and hopes to make them even more lively and engaging during her last year at UNC Asheville.

Throughout her time at UNC Asheville, Brittany has been very involved with the volunteering effort that has been put forth by the student-athlete body. She has worked with a multitude of students from Asheville Middle and High school, helping with their overall development by being a student mentor. She has also volunteered with the Children First organization, hoping to empower children and their families to reach their full potential through advocacy, education and services. She chose UNC Asheville for countless reasons, primarily because she loved the diversity on campus. It was much different than what she was used to, so she loved making Asheville her home for the past three years.

This summer, Brittany has been working and attending summer school. In the midst of training for her senior basketball season, she found time to attend the Big South Leadership Conference in nearby Black Mountain, North Carolina. At the conference, she was exposed to numerous ways on how to increase her leadership capabilities. While learning how to encourage team-building and personal development, Brittany was able to connect with fellow Big South student-athletes. It was a wonderful opportunity for Brittany, and she’s glad she got to participate in such a unique forum.

Brittany is excited about the promising season that the UNC Asheville women’s basketball team has coming up this winter. Make it a priority to stop by Kimmel Arena to watch her and her Bulldog teammates take on the Big South with Coach Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick. Come see why we’re proud that Brittany Gwyn is an exemplary UNC Asheville Bulldog!
