CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Winthrop junior Matt Thielepape (Austin, Texas) and UNC Asheville freshman Ryan Dull (Winston-Salem, N.C.) have been named the Choice Hotels Player of the Week and New Balance Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for games played April 6-12, it was announced today by the League office.
Dull picked up his third Big South victory of the year as he threw his third-straight complete game against then League-leading Liberty on Saturday. He went the full nine innings and allowed two earned runs and scattered 10 hits. He walked one and struck out three Flames in winning, 9-2. All three of his complete games have come against Big South foes and he is 3-3 against Big South opponents this season. Dull is second Bulldog pitcher to earn the award this season joining Michael Bogaert who earned the honor on March 2.
Dull’s became the first UNC Asheville pitcher to throw three consecutive complete games since Marc Rosenbalm in 1991. He is the first Asheville player to ever throw three straight nine inning complete games. Dull leads the Bulldogs in ERA with a 3.83 mark which is 10th in the Big South. He is trying to become the first freshman starter to lead the team in ERA since David Williams in 2004.
Thielepape continued his offensive explosion this past week by hitting an outstanding .684 (13-19) with four home runs and six RBI. He also had four doubles, nine runs scored, 29 total bases, a slugging percentage of 1.526 and an OBA of .714. He raised his batting average from .277 entering the week to .369. Thielepape started off the week on a positive note by hitting two homers in the doubleheader against No. 5 Georgia, and then added two more home runs in the doubleheader sweep against Presbyterian. He went 3-for-5 with two HR and two RBI against the Bulldogs and followed that with a 10-for-14 performance with two HR and four RBI in the three-game series against the Blue Hose.
UNC Asheville returns to action on Tuesday to face USC Upstate in a 3 p.m. game at Greenwood Field.
