BOONE, N.C. - Scott Szymanski and Ian Willmot scored goals in the first 11 minutes but UNC Asheville could not hold on as Appalachian State came back to take a 3-2 victory over the Bulldogs at the ASU Soccer Field on Wednesday.
Szymanski netted his team-leading fourth goal of the season in just the fifth minute off the rebound on a shot from Daniel Bondoly to give the Bulldogs (0-3-1) a 1-0 lead. Bondoly also assisted on Willmot's first goal of the season in the 11th minute to put Asheville up 2-0 early. For Bondoly, it was his fifth helper of the season.
App State (4-2-0) cut the lead in half as Tate Parrish scored his first of two goals in the 14th minute. After the early fireworks, the game calmed down and the score remained 2-1 at halftime. ASU out-shot Asheville 12-5 in the first 45 minutes but the Bulldogs held the lead going into the locker room thanks to three first half saves by Michael Pereira.
ASU tied the match in the 56th minute as Parrish netted his second goal of the game and third of the season on a breakaway set up, as he was on his first goal, by Juan Obregon. Nine minutes later, Parrish assisted on the game-winning header by Aaron Ammar in the 65th minute. It was Ammar's first tally of the year and the second ASU goal off a free kick in the match.
The Bulldogs had a number of chances in the second half as they took 12 shots forcing Alec Dufty to make three saves. Asheville had two chances in the final five minutes playing up a man as Paul Pessina was sent off in the 85th minute after being shown his second yellow card of the match. On the ensuing free kick, the Bulldogs missed high of goal from 16 yards out. A minute later, Caleb Alexander hit the post following a corner kick. Asheville held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks despite being out shot in the match 27-17.
Asheville will return home to open Big South Conference play on Sunday against Birmingham-Southern at Greenwood Field at 2 p.m. The match can be heard live on uncabulldogs.com with the pre-game show beginning at 1:50 p.m.
