ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Senior forward Hilary McKay scored early in the second half as UNC Asheville edged Winthrop, 1-0 in Big South Conference women's college soccer action Tuesday afternoon at Greenwood Field.

The Bulldogs (6-3-0, 3-1-0 BSC) won their second straight match as McKay scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season. Winthrop (6-5-1, 1-2-0 BSC) had its two-game winning streak stopped.

Asheville goalkeeper Mich Mattos earned her sixth shutout of the season by making four saves. The Bulldogs outshot the Lady Eagles, 16-9 but Winthrop had one goal called back and just missed scoring on several other shots.

"We found a way to win and that's always good," commented Asheville coach Michele Cornish. "Winthrop is a very good team, and we knew this would be a tough match. We were able to get a great goal from Hilary and then hang on for the victory. This was a big win today."

The Bulldogs controlled play early and had the first four shots of the game before Winthrop rallied. The Lady Eagles seemed to get on the board when Chelsa White scored on a rebound in the 20th minute. However, the Lady Eagles were called for an off-sides infraction and the goal was disallowed.

UNCA controlled play in the final 15 minutes of the half but Winthrop goalkeeper Dimitra Poulos made four saves in the final 10 minutes of the half to keep the Bulldogs off the board.

Asheville scored its only goal at the 54:12 mark of the second half on a great play by McKay. The Candler native collected a pass from Emily Langill and fought her way toward the goal. She then booted the ball into the far right corner of the net for a 1-0 Bulldogs' lead.

UNCA came close to scoring again as freshman forward Robyn Busha hit the cross bar on a shot from 15 yards out five minutes later.

Winthrop came to tying the match on a free kick with 10 minutes remaining. Erin Foote blasted a shot from 40 yards out that was heading toward the top part of the goal until Mattos was able to barely punch the ball away to keep the Bulldogs in front, 1-0.

UNC Asheville will be in action again Saturday afternoon (Oct. 8) against Big South Conference rival Liberty starting at 2 p.m. Winthrop is at Birmingham-Southern Friday evening (Oct. 7) at 6 p.m. CST.
