ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Gardner-Webb scored once in each as the Runnin' Bulldogs recorded a 2-0 non-conference win over homestanding UNC Asheville Saturday afternoon at Greenwood Field.
Gardner-Webb got a goal from Gampi Lapeschi in the 6th minute and a goal from Brian Young in the 62nd minute to improve its record to 8-7-1 on the season. The Bulldogs lost for the ninth straight time and fell to 2-14-1.
"Gardner-Webb is a very good team and they just took it to us early in the match," commented Asheville coach Steve Cornish. "We played better at the start of the second half but then they scored against the run of play. Gardner-Webb was simply better than us today."
Asheville goalkeeper Michael Pereira kept the Bulldogs in the match with eight saves. UNCA's best scoring chance came midway through the second half when Ryan Haupt's 10-yard blast was stopped by Gardner-Webb goalkeeper Tyler Kettering.
Lapeschi opened the scoring on a free kick. Asheville was called for a foul and Lapeschi had a free kick from 15 yards away. His first kick was blocked by the Bulldog defense but the ball rolled right to him. Lapeschi then blasted a shot from 10 yards for his 10th goal of the season at the 5:42 mark.
It stayed that way until the 62nd minute when Carlton Hughes sent a pass to Brian Young. Young was in the box and headed the ball into the upper part of the goal for a 2-0 GWU lead. It was Young's fourth goal of the season.
UNC Asheville will compete in the Big South Conference Tournament on Thursday against a team yet to be determined. The Bulldogs will be the eighth seed in the tournament and the tournament will be played at High Point.
