Volleyball Downs Montreat in Three Games - UNC Asheville Bulldogs Official Athletics Site

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville won its 10th match of the year with a 3-0 victory over visiting Montreat College Tuesday night in college volleyball action at Justice Center Tuesday night. The Bulldogs won the match 30-8, 30-22, 30-13.
It was Asheville's eighth victory in its last 10 matches and improved the Bulldogs record to 10-14. The Lady Cavaliers fell to 8-19.
The match was a special one for Montreat head coach Leslie Whitfield-Gehris who played for the UNC Asheville program from 1998-2002. She set a NCAA record for digs in the 2002 season with 763. Leslie played for Asheville head coach Julie Torbett.
"It is never easy to coach against someone who played for you," commented Torbett. "However, all of us at UNC Asheville are very proud of Leslie and the great job she is doing at Montreat.
"I was glad we got the win and had a chance to play a lot of players," added Torbett. "I was impressed with the way Montreat played. We obviously have more talent than they do but their kids competed and fought very hard. They made nothing easy for us and are very well-coached. Leslie will have Montreat heading to the top of its conference very quickly."
Freshman Lauren Ficker led the Bulldogs with 14 kills and six blocks. Elif Unlu contributed another double-double with 13 kills and 10 digs. It was the senior outside hitter's 22nd double-double of the year. Alysha Greer finished with 10 kills.
Montreat was led by Angela Birchfield with eight kills. Alison Williams had five kills. Danny Bowers led the Cavalier effort on defense with six digs.
Asheville is on the road this weekend as the Bulldogs travel to Virginia for two matches. The Bulldogs play at Liberty Friday night at 7 p.m., followed by a match at Radford Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
