BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - On a frigid Monday night, the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs shutout the UNC Asheville Bulldogs 1-0 in the Battle of the Bulldogs. The non-conference match was originally scheduled for August 30 but was postponed due to rain and lightning.
The win moves Gardner-Webb to 7-6-3 overall, while Asheville falls to 5-11-0.
The lone goal of the game came by way of senior Jamie Miller at the 27.44 mark, who fittingly scored his second goal of the season on Senior Night with this one coming on a penalty kick.
Sophomore Chris Salvaggione was pulled down in the box by an Asheville defender while trying to find space to take a shot. Miler put the ball enroute to the lower left hand corner of the box, where the Asheville keeper Michael Pereira got a hand on it, but could not slow it down as the ball rolled past the goalline and into the net.
Gardner-Webb controlled the first half but Asheville dominated the second half. The Bulldog of UNC Asheville just missed tying the match on several occassions. The last came with 30 seconds left when Scott Szymanski blasted a shot from 15 yards out that GWU goalkeeper Tyler Kettiring made a diving save on.
"We made some adjustments at halftime and played some very good soccer," commented Asheville coach Steve Cornish. "I thought we controlled play in the second half and came very close to tying the match. This is a tough loss but some of our back-ups got a chance to play and responded quite well."
Pereira had 10 saves as he faced a relentless GWU offense that fired 18 shots for the game. UNC Asheville was led in shots by Ian Willmot who had three.
The Asheville Bulldogs have the rest of the week off and will finish the regular season Saturday afternoon against Birmingham-Southern starting at 2 p.m. CST
