Bulldogs Out-Shoot Delaware State; Fall 1-0 in Home Opener

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – In its home-opening contest, the UNC Asheville women's soccer team out-shot Delaware State, but the Bulldogs fell, 1-0, to Delaware State at Greenwood Field on Friday.

How It Happened
The Hornets had a strong opportunity to net the first goal of the game in the 12th minute, as they struck a pair of shots on frame in a span of 30 seconds. However, Bulldog freshman goalkeeper Bronwyn Luitwieler made the first save, while defender Kyra Kandel made a team save on the second shot on goal.
The Bulldogs best chance to find the back of the net in the first half was in the 39th minute. Senior Bella Iorio ripped a shot from outside of the 18-yard box, but the attempt sailed just high of the crossbar.
One minute later, Delaware State scored the game's only goal. Savannah Ay netted the ultimate game-winner, as she found the left side of the net.
At the halftime intermission, DSU held a narrow 6-3 advantage in shots. Luitwieler corralled four saves to lead the Bulldog defense.
In the first 11 minutes of the second half, the Bulldog offense started to attack the net, as it took three shots.
At the 64th minute, the Bulldogs had another key chance on goal, as Kandel took a shot on frame following a corner kick. However, the shot was saved by the Hornet goalkeeper.
Asheville continued to pepper the net in the final 10 minutes, as it took four shots with one on goal. However, none of the attempts could find the back of the net, which sealed the 1-0 victory for Delaware State.
In the second half, the Bulldogs out-shot the Hornets, 11-4. Overall, Asheville connected with 14 shots to DSU's 10 shots.
What's Next?
The Bulldogs take a day off before making the quick return to the pitch on Sunday, Sept. 2. UNC Asheville will square off with The Citadel at Greenwood Field. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
