CLINTON, S.C. – UNC Asheville dropped a hard-fought five-set match (25-17, 23-25, 25-21, 17-25, 12-15) at Presbyterian on Friday night (Oct. 24) inside the Templeton Center.
It was a back-and-forth affair with Asheville winning the opening and third sets and Presbyterian taking the second and final two frames.
Addie Brookbank led Asheville with 15.5 points, totaling nine kills, a career-high of six service aces, and 21 digs for another strong all-around performance. Kylie Cackovic had 12 kills and 12 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. She also contributed two aces. Lydia Pate matched her career-high in kills as she tallied 11 and had a team-high .348 attack percentage. She added two block assists and two aces to her stat line. Payton Rolfsen dished out 25 assists, seven digs, and two aces, while Selina Koc had 15 assists. Michelle Thao recorded 16 digs and five assists. Ana Djurovic and Albertine van der Goot nearly reached double-figure kills as they both recorded nine.
Set 1: Asheville jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead behind a solo block from Rolfsen, two kills from Cackovic, a kill from Djurovic, and an early ace from Brookbank. Asheville controlled the rest of the frame and closed the set out with back-to-back kills from Brookbank and a kill from Djurovic to open the match with a 25-17 win.
Set 2: Presbyterian responded with a quick lead in the second frame, as the Blue Hose jumped out to a six-point lead (15-9). Asheville battled back, bringing Presbyterian's lead down to one late in the set with a kill from Pate (23-22). The Blue Hose reached set point before a kill from Djurovic cut the lead back down to one, but Presbyterian took advantage of an Asheville service error to even the match 1-1.
Set 3: The third frame went back-and-forth with 11 ties and six lead changes. Both teams were tied at 21 when Asheville gained momentum and scored the final four points of the set to take a 2-1 match lead. A kill from van der Goot sparked Asheville's set-closing run, followed by a kill from Brookbank, an error from PC, and a service ace from Thao.
Set 4: Presbyterian capitalized on a series of Bulldog attack errors to take the fourth 25-17 and force a deciding set. Asheville committed 10 attack errors compared to Presbyterian's two.
Set 5: It was a fight to the finish with the final frame featuring six ties and three lead changes. Asheville trailed 10-8, but a 4-0 run by the Bulldogs put them ahead 12-10. This, however, would be Asheville's final lead, as Presbyterian closed the match on a 5-0 run.
