Women Earn Best Finish in 21 Years With Runner-Up Performance; Men Take Third for Program’s Best Overall Showing Since 2000

FARMVILLE, Va. - The UNC Asheville cross country teams had a standout showing at the Big South Championships on Friday (Oct. 31). The women finished runner-up in the 5k with 62 points, the highest team finish for Asheville since 2004. The men placed third overall in the 8k with 87 points. The combined team's finish marks the highest for Asheville in 25 years, when both teams finished runner-up in 2000. 

Alison Graf secured the top finish for the Bulldogs, taking seventh place in the women's section to earn a spot on the All-Conference First Team. Graf is the first Bulldog since 2013 to earn First Team recognition. Her overall time of 17:52 marks her second-fastest performance of her collegiate career.

Isabel Richardson and Aneta Kucerová earned All-Conference Second Team spots, placing ninth (18:11) and 11th (18:20), respectively. This marks the first time since 2003 that Asheville has had three women earn All-Conference honors.

Also scoring crucial points for the Bulldogs were Sophie Lundin (17th, 18:31), Marika Dickel (18th, 18:32), Addi Corl (23rd, 18:44), and Ella Moore (25th, 18:46). Corl had the strongest second mile for the Bulldogs, moving up an impressive 13 places from her position at the 1.2k mark to the 3k mark. Payton Murphy (45th, 19:26), Grace Thompson (46th, 19:31), and Nikole Baikova (53rd, 19:50) also represented Asheville.

Isabel Richardson represented the Bulldogs on the Big South All-Academic team. 

Jan Málek led the Bulldogs on the men's side, earning a spot on the All-Conference Second Team with his ninth-place finish in 25:14. Málek worked his way through the pack, jumping eight places from the start to the 6k mark. 

Next to finish for Asheville was Yates Hockaday at 17th (25:45), and hot on his heels was Quinn Jacquez in 18th place (25:46). Also finishing as points-scorers for the Bulldogs were Jonas Roach (20th, 25:47), Tadiyos Sloan-Westmoreland (25th, 26:05), Felix Bett (29th, 26:18), and Bennett Moreno (42nd, 26:57). 

Also representing Asheville were Asher Roach (48th, 27:15), Lance Surles (51st, 27:34), and Sam Hulsey (69th, 29:00). 

Quinn Jacquez represented Asheville on the Big South All-Academic team.

The men's team has finished in the top three of the Big South for the past five years.
