ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Scott Szymanski scored twice and added two assists as UNC Asheville roared past Wofford, 5-0 in collegiate men's soccer action at Greenwood Field Wednesday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (1-2-0) won their first game of the season by breaking open a close game at halftime with four goals against the Terriers (1-3-1). UNC Asheville scored four times in the second half after leading 1-0 at intermission.

Szymanski scored the Bulldogs first two goals of the match. He then assisted on goals from Ian Willmot and Barrett Locke in the second half. Willmot finished with two goals, while Locke tallied his first goal of the season.

"We really did a wonderful job going forward today," stated Asheville coach Steve Cornish. "I feel for Wofford as we are certainly not five goals better than them. It was a case where we converted on our opportunities and they didn't.

"Scott Szymanski played like a lad possessed today," added Cornish. "He had great energy and made things happen the whole day. This is a great result for our lads and hopefully we can build on this for Kentucky on Saturday."

It was a frustrating match for Wofford as it had eight corner kicks to just four for Asheville. The Terriers had two goals taken away in the final 30 seconds of the match. The first was for off-sides and the second was ruled that the goal had happened after the horn had sounded.

The match was pretty even for much of the first half as each team had good scoring chances. Finally, Szymanski scored his first goal of the game off an assist from Benjamin Meyer at the 39:42 mark.

The Bulldogs led 1-0 early in the second half when Szymanski scored his second goal. He hit a soft shot that simply went through the hands of Wofford goalkeeper Thomas Harrison III at the 49:05 mark for a 2-0 Asheville advantage.

Willmot and Szymanski teamed up for the third goal of the game at the 54:42 mark as Willmot took a perfect feed from the sophomore forward and scored from 10 yards out to pad the lead to 3-0. Willmot added his second goal of the game at the 67:52 mark, off an assist from David Verga.

Locke scored his 18th career goal at the 78:34 mark to push the lead to 5-0 as Szymanski picked up his second assist of the game. The six points was a career high for the Asheville native. UNC Asheville hosts Kentucky Saturday afternoon at Greenwood Field starting at 2 p.m.
