ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Longwood scored two goals in the first half and that was enough for the Lancers to knock off UNC Asheville, 2-0 in college women's soccer action at Greenwood Field Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (3-2-1) had chances in the second half as they outshot Longwood, 7-1 but simply could not put the ball into the back of the net. Leading scorer Robyn Busha hit the cross bar with 10 minutes left and Shohana Fried just missed on a rebound attempt.
"We were a little sluggish today," commented Asheville coach Michele Cornish. "We gave up an early goal and just couldn't get a goal to get back into the match. We'll simply have to bounce back from this match and get ready for Western Carolina."
The Lancers (3-2-1) scored on their first shot of the game. Vanessa Congdon sent a pass to Sarah Fening. Fening that hit a shot from 20 yards out that went into the right-hand side of the goal for a 1-0 Longwood lead at the 3:42 mark.
The Bulldogs put some shots on goal in the opening half as Joy Haynes had three shots but Longwood goalkeeper Anne Whitmore stopped all of them. Late in the first half, Katie Young picked up a loose ball off a corner kick and hit a shot from 15 yards for a 2-0 lead at 43:28.
In the second half, it was all Asheville. The Bulldogs limited the Lancers to just one shot but could not get the ball past Whitmore.
UNC Asheville plays next at defending Southern Conference champion Western Carolina Tuesday night in Cullowhee starting at 7 p.m.
