Furman Slips Past UNC Asheville, 3-2
09.09.2011 | Men's Soccer
After coming out of halftime deadlocked at 0-0, Furman netted three goals and held off a late Bulldogs rally to capture its third consecutive victory and improve to 3-1-1 on the season. UNC Asheville dropped to 0-3-1.
Sophomore Martin Ontiverso broke the scoreless tie at 49:25 when he curled his free kick from 24 yards out on the left side past Asheville keeper Lassi Hurskainen and inside the near post for his first tally as a Paladin. Less than 10 minutes later, however, Bryan Bartels drove a shot from the left corner of the box into the far corner to pull the Bulldogs even just 59 seconds short of the hour mark. It was Bartels first goal of the season.
Zimmerman, a freshman from Lawrenceville, Ga., who captained the United States U-18 National Team this past summer, put the Paladins in front with his first collegiate goal at 70:25. Ontiveros booted a corner kick to the top of the six-yard box and the 6-foot-3 Zimmerman rose above the defense to hammer a header into the center of the goal. In the 73rd minute, he doubled the Furman lead connecting with a Daniel Hojaii kick at the top of the six-yard box to head home his second of the half.
UNC Asheville crept back into the match with under 11 minutes remaining when a Paladin defender, attempting to clear a ball out of his own box, popped the ball over the head of the goalkeeper and into an empty net for an own goal.
Furman outshot Asheville 15-7, including a 9-4 edge in shots on goal. The Paladins earned 10 corner kicks without conceding any to the Bulldogs. Kann stopped two shots to earn the victory in goal for Furman while Hurskainen totaled six saves for Asheville.
The Bulldogs face College of Charleston on Sunday at Noon in the second round of the Furman Invitational at Stone Soccer Stadium.
