Baseball Night in Asheville a Huge Success
01.20.2017 | Baseball
When asked by emcee Brian Hall what advice he would give to the current grouping of UNC Asheville baseball student-athletes, Major League Baseball star Cameron Maybin kept it simple by saying "embrace the opportunity."
The profound statement from Maybin could be said of everyone in attendance at the 2017 Baseball Night in Asheville sponsored by Vannoy Construction on Friday, Jan. 20, at Highland Brewery as the capacity crowd in attendance relished every second of the event headlined by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim outfielder.
Maybin truly appreciated the chance to support UNC Asheville baseball on an evening that featured a live and silent auction as well as a speaking program where the MLB star even answered questions from the crowd.
"This is huge," Maybin said of the opportunity to support the Bulldogs. "I've been a huge advocate of Asheville the city and everybody knows that. I've been blessed to have a relationship with UNC Asheville starting with (former Asheville head baseball) Coach Tom Smith. I've had the chance to come up to the facility, work out and hit. This is a great event for people to come out and support these student-athletes. I'm hoping to be a part of it for years to come. It's a great opportunity to start a long-lasting relationship for me with a great University with great people."
The General Manager for Fundraising and Corporate Sponsorships through UNC Asheville's partnership with IMG, Kelly Schukart could not have been more pleased with how everything turned out on the evening.
"This is fantastic," Schukart said. "We're really excited to have alumni, parents, players and community members all here on the evening to support UNC Asheville baseball."
After UNC Asheville Chancellor Mary K. Grant talked with the crowd, Hall introduced the 2017 Bulldog baseball team before UNC Asheville baseball head coach Scott Friedholm took the stage to thank everyone in attendance for all they do for their program.
During his time on stage, Friedholm also made the huge announcement that just prior to Baseball Night in Asheville the single largest donor gift for the Home Run Campaign for updates to Greenwood Field in a six-figure gift had been secured.
With the capacity crowd in attendance at Baseball Night in Asheville coupled with the six-figure gift, Friedholm noted it was easy to see that momentum was building for the Bulldog baseball program.
"It means this program and what we're trying to build here is going in the right direction," Friedholm said. "Sometimes it's a slower process than we want it to be, but with all of the help from the people within the athletic department and the IMG group we were able to secure that first big donation to hopefully kickstart this campaign."
UNC Asheville Athletics Director Janet R. Cone echoed Friedholm's thoughts.
"I am so excited for not only our baseball program tonight, but our coaches and our committee that worked on this event," Cone said. "Obviously this is a huge success and a great turnout. It's really great to see not only those in Asheville show up for this event, but also the many alums and others from out of town come to support this tremendous event as well."
One of those alums in attendance was Bulldog great and current Oakland Athletics right-handed pitcher Ryan Dull.
UNC Asheville opens their 2017 season Feb. 17-19 in Birmingham, Ala. with a three-game series against Samford. The Bulldogs' home-opening series is March 3-5 against Iona at Greenwood Field.
