ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville baseball players and coaches devoted Saturday, August 27, to assisting an area home for abused, dependent, and neglected children in the renovation of their athletic facilities.

The Eliada Home (www.eliada.org) was founded in 1903 to help children and families through difficult times with a full-service approach to providing a bright future. The entire UNCA baseball roster and coaching staff was in attendance to aid the Eliada Home in their mission to enhance the experiences offered through athletic programs.

By the end of the day, the chain link fence that encircles the baseball/soccer field was painted, the infield was cleared of rocks, and the overall playing surface was greatly improved.

"Our guys are really excited about making a difference for kids who have not enjoyed the same privileges that we may take for granted," said Head Coach Willie Stewart. "It is a great eye-opener to realize that the bonds that are formed on this field can give a kid a sense of connection that they might not have found otherwise."

Nathan Durham puts the finishing touches on the fence.

2005 marks the second year for the baseball team to perform community service at the Eliada Home, and UNCA hopes that their interaction with the children can continue in the future.
