Box Score

ROCK HILL, S.C. - Winthrop scored three times in the first half and added one more in the second half for a 4-0 Big South Conference victory over UNC Asheville Wednesday night.

The Eagles (10-6-1, 4-2-1 Big South) scored three times in 27 minutes to take control of the match while out-shooting Asheville (2-13-1, 1-6 Big South) 24-9 in the match.

Dee Vidra opened the scoring with his fifth goal of the season in the 14th minute. Michael Chumah sent a shot across the box that was deflected to Vidra who scored easily from 20 yards out. 16 minutes later, it was Chumah who beat two defenders to notch his 4th goal of the season in the 30th minute. The Eagles leading scorer Saidi Isaac scored his 16th of the year in the 41st minute. Dustin Bybee got to the end line and played the ball back to the six-yard box where Isaac put it to the back of the net with a sliding shot to put the home team up 3-0 at halftime.

Scott Szymanski had the Bulldogs best chance to score in the opening period in the 12th minute. Daniel Bandoly sent a ball across that Szymanski got his head to but Winthrop goalkeeper Patrick Mitrovich made the best of his five saves to keep the `Dogs off the scoreboard. Kyle Proctor had an opportunity in the 38th minute that he hit wide of goal frim the top of the 18-yard box.

"We know that Winthrop was an explosive team going forward. We tried to counter with a new formation which seemed to be effective for most of the game but ultimately we couldn't stop them from getting to the by-line and cutting it back," said Asheville head coach Steve Cornish. "I was pleased with our performance in the midfield nut its virtually impossible to keep them scoreless for 90 minutes."

The only goal of the second half came off the foot of Sean Weron in the 60th minute. Weron got loose on a breakaway his first shot was saved by Michael Pereira who had nine saves on the match but the rebound went right back to Weron who then had an open net to shoot at. It was his first goal of the season.

Szymanski had another good scoring chance in the second 45 minutes as a rebound came out to him from 15-yards out but he kicked the top half of the ball and Mitrovich was able to make the save. Szymanski led the Bulldogs with four shots, three of them on goal. Five other players had one shot each.

Asheville returns to action on Saturday in the final regular season match of the year to face Gardner-Webb. The 2 p.m. match will be broadcast live at www.uncabulldogs.com. It will also be Senior Day as the Bulldogs will honor Grant Gilmore before the match.
