ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Elif Unlu led three UNC Asheville attackers in double figures with 21 kills as the Bulldogs defeated High Point 3-1 (26-30, 30-18, 30-22, 30-23) at the Justice Center Sunday afternoon.
Unlu who had 24 kills against Winthrop on Friday had 21 kills and added 18 digs for her 15th double-double of the season on Sunday. Alysha Greer had 11 kills and Emily Palma had a career-high 10 kills for the Bulldogs who improve to 9-14 on the season and 7-2 in the Big South.
High Point (6-18, 4-5 Big South) was led by Jamie Kaufman who had 13 kills and 10 digs and Audie Gonzalez who chipped in 11 kills and 13 digs.
The Panthers had four of their 11 team blocks in game one as they hit .114 in the opener to hold off Asheville 30-26. There were 14 ties and seven lead changes in the first game. HPU had game-point at 29-23, before Asheville ran off three straight points. After a timeout, Gonzalez put down game point to give the Panthers win.
Asheville's offense came alive in the second game as Unlu had 10 kills in game two alone. The Bulldogs earned a sideout 84 percent of the time in the second game on way to a 30-18 victory to tie the match at a game apiece.
The Bulldogs continued their dominance offensively in games three and four. The Bulldogs hit .170 in the match to just .069 for the Panthers. Asheville out dug High Point 96-78 as Raquel Miotto had 28 digs and Brooke Holiday added 17 digs. Lauren Hatch had 28 digs for the Panthers.
Kaitlyn McDaniel had three of the Bulldogs seven service aces on the match. High Point had just three aces and committed 14 service errors in the match.
Asheville has not lost to High Point in the 22 meetings since the Panthers joined the Big South in 1997.
The Bulldogs step out of conference on Tuesday to host Montreat in a 7 p.m. match at the Justice Center. The match will be broadcast on bigsouthsports.com.
